Practical checklists for the garage jobs that call for the right tool, the right information, and no guesswork.

01 · Brake pads and rotors

Protect the brake system before chasing speed.

Brake work is vehicle-specific. Follow the exact procedure for its brake and parking-brake system, then verify every safety-critical step before driving.

Prepare the job

  • Work on level, solid ground. Chock the wheels that stay on the ground and use only the approved lift points in the owner’s manual.
  • Raise and support the vehicle with correctly rated jack stands. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack.
  • Use the correct sockets, brake hardware, lubricant, cleaner, and replacement parts for the vehicle. Keep brake friction surfaces free of oil and grease.

Work through the brakes

  • Loosen wheel fasteners while the tire is on the ground, then remove the wheel only after the vehicle is securely supported.
  • Support the caliper so its hose is not carrying its weight. Inspect the hose, slide pins, boots, and hardware before reassembly.
  • Do not assume every rotor has extractor holes, every fastener needs threadlocker, or every rear caliper piston simply presses straight in.
  • For electronic parking brakes or rear calipers with an integrated parking-brake mechanism, use the vehicle-specific service procedure. Do not force the piston.

Verify before driving

  • Torque caliper, bracket, and wheel fasteners to the vehicle manufacturer’s specification.
  • Check brake-fluid level, close the reservoir cap, and pump the pedal until it feels firm while the vehicle is stationary.
  • Do not drive if the pedal is soft, a warning light remains on, fluid is leaking, or any fastener or component is uncertain.

02 · Exterior detailing

Remove dirt safely before adding gloss.

A good detail starts with the least aggressive method. Wash only on cool surfaces, use products suitable for the material in front of you, and avoid dragging loose grit across paint.

Set up the wash

  • Use a clean wash mitt, dedicated drying towels, and separate tools for wheels and paint.
  • Clean wheels, tires, and wheel wells first when they are cool. Confirm the cleaner is compatible with the wheel finish and follow its dwell-time instructions.
  • Rinse the vehicle thoroughly before contact washing. Use one bucket for wash solution and one for rinsing the mitt if that is your chosen process.

Wash and decontaminate

  • Wash from higher, cleaner panels toward lower, dirtier panels with light, straight passes. Rinse the mitt often.
  • Only clay paint that still feels rough after washing. Rinse and dry first, then use dedicated clay lubricant generously on one small section at a time.
  • Use light pressure, keep the surface lubricated, fold traditional clay to a clean face, and discard it if it touches the ground. Claying can leave light marring, so inspect the finish before applying protection.

Dry and protect

  • Dry with clean towels and minimal pressure. Use a fresh towel to level the chosen protectant according to its label.
  • Apply tire dressing only to clean, dry sidewalls. Keep products off brake components and tire tread.

03 · Routine tire and wheel service

Use the vehicle’s specification, not a generic number.

Tire pressure, tread, wheel fitment, and wheel-fastener torque are safety items. Check the vehicle placard and owner’s manual before touching the torque wrench.

Inspect before service

  • Check pressure when tires are cold, usually before driving or after the vehicle has been parked for at least three hours. Use the driver-door placard or owner’s manual, not the tire sidewall maximum.
  • Check tread across the inner, center, and outer areas, and inspect sidewalls for damage. Replace tires at the limit stated in the vehicle guidance and local requirements. In the United States, NHTSA identifies 2/32 inch as the replacement point.
  • Look for uneven wear, vibration, bulges, cuts, or recurring pressure loss. These are reasons to stop and have the tire or alignment inspected.

Rotate and refit carefully

  • Use the rotation pattern in the owner’s manual. Directional tires, staggered wheel sizes, full-size spares, and some tire-pressure monitoring systems can change the correct approach.
  • Hand-start every wheel fastener. Never apply lubricant to wheel studs unless the manufacturer specifically calls for it.
  • Torque fasteners in the specified sequence with a calibrated torque wrench, using the exact vehicle specification. Do not substitute a typical car or truck torque figure.

Set up a safer workflow

  • Keep the work area around a raised vehicle clear. Store the tools you use most where they are easy to reach without climbing or stretching.
  • Keep a drain pan, absorbent material, gloves, and eye protection ready before handling fluids. Dispose of automotive fluids through an approved local collection program.
  • Keep an appropriate fire extinguisher accessible on the exit route, so you can reach it without moving toward a fire.
